BC PLACE CHARITY TOURNAMENTS
Player & Spectator Information
Please review the guidelines, location details and game rules below for a smooth and timely game day.
Arrival, Location & Entry
- Entrance: East Entrance (Lot 458) on Griffiths Way, between Pacific Blvd. and Expo Blvd., beneath the Georgia Viaduct and directly below Gate C, across from Rogers Arena.
- Arrival time: All teams must arrive at least 20 minutes before their scheduled match time.
- Check-in: Go straight to the Check-In Desk. If no security guard is at the metal gate, use the intercom. Every player gets a wristband that identifies them as a player, plus a number to help track scorers. Captains must hand these out to their players before each game.
- In/out privileges: Players may leave and re-enter the stadium throughout the day.
Uniforms & Equipment
- Jerseys: Bring both a light and a dark-coloured shirt to avoid colour conflicts. Pinnies are available for kit clashes, but teams must return them after the game.
- Footwear: Metal cleats are strictly prohibited.
- Jewelry & casts: All jewelry (necklaces, rings, earrings, watches, soft or hard wristbands) is strictly prohibited and must be removed before play. Rigid casts or braces with exposed metal or hard plastic are not permitted on the field. Medical alert tags are permitted if taped securely.
- Shin guards: Not required for this tournament. Players wear them at their own discretion.
Match Format & Tournament Rules
- Team size: 7-a-side.
- Men’s tournament: Male-only players.
- Co-Ed tournament: A minimum of 2 male and 2 female players must be on the field at all times (excluding the goalkeeper).
- Game duration: 20 minutes of straight time, with no half time.
- Punctuality: Games must start on time. If a team is not ready, the game will be cut shorter to keep the tournament on schedule.
- Kick-off: The referee designates the Home Team to take the initial kick-off at the centre spot. A goal cannot be scored directly from a kick-off. Opposing players must stay at least 6 yards away until the ball is in play. A kick-off also restarts play after a goal.
- Kick-ins: When the ball goes out over the sideline, play restarts with a kick-in. Opposing players must stay at least 6 yards away until the kick is taken.
- Tackling & sliding: No sliding or slide tackling. Players must stay on their feet. Sliding without contact results in a direct free kick. Slide tackling with contact results in a direct free kick (or penalty) and can lead to a temporary send-off (“cool-down” or sin bin), depending on the severity of the offence.
- Rolling substitutions: Field players may be substituted on the fly during play, but the outgoing player must leave the field at the same spot where the incoming player enters.
- Goalkeeper substitutions: Only during a formal stoppage in play, with the referee’s authorization.
- Free kicks: All standard fouls result in a direct free kick for the opposing team, from the spot of the infraction.
- Defensive distance: Opposing players must stand at least 6 yards from the free kick. If the free kick is awarded closer than 6 yards to the goal line, defenders may stand on their goal line between the posts.
- Penalty kicks: Awarded when a defender or goalkeeper fouls inside their own penalty area. The penalty mark is 8 yards from the centre of the goal.
- Back-pass rule: Goalkeepers cannot handle a deliberate direct back-pass made by a teammate’s foot or a kick-in.
- Cherry-picking / offside: Players must make an active effort to transition with the flow of the game. A player is penalized for cherry-picking if they deliberately stay offside near the goalkeeper, or are slow to return on a transition and receive a pass. Play is halted and an indirect free kick is awarded to the opposing team. Teams should not call out opponents themselves. Leave it to the referee.
- Knockout games: Straight 20 minutes. If tied after 20 minutes, each team takes 3 penalties to decide the winner. If still tied, the teams go to a sudden-death penalty shoot-out.
Spectators & Seating
- Seating: Seating is available in the stands for all spectators and resting players.
- Field access: Strictly no spectators on the field. Only registered players and team officials are permitted past the sideline barriers.
Stadium Rules & Policies
- No drones: Drones and remote-controlled aerial devices are strictly prohibited inside or around the stadium.
- No outside food or drink: No external food, beverages or coolers. Water bottles for players are permitted on the sideline.
- No smoking or vaping: BC Place is a completely smoke-free and vape-free facility.
